Love's Labour's Wonne, F&M theater professor Dorothy Louise's inventive sequel to William Shakespeare's Love's
Labour's Lost, will be presented Oct. 27-30 [2005] in Franklin & Marshall's Roschel Performing Arts Center. Louise will
also direct ...
... At the end of Love's Labour's Lost, news of the death of the Princess's father halts four couples on the road to
matrimony. Everything stops, including the entertainment prepared for festivities, as the Princess prepares to return
home. The couples agree to meet again in a year and a day and disperse to a song of spring and winter.
The play implies a sequel and, apparently, there was one, of which only the title, Love's Labour's Wonne, has survived -
at least so far. Scholars speculated the title might simply be an alternative to a surviving play, such as Much Ado About
Nothing, until in 1953, a list of titles turned up that included all the possible alternatives, as well as Love's Labour's
Wonne. So the play did exist… maybe this is it.
"Eight years ago, when I directed Love's Labour's Lost in the Green Room Theatre, I wanted to see, to find, even to
invent the sequel," said Louise. "Last year on sabbatical, I enjoyed the uninterrupted time to try my hand at supplying it
- an act of hubris, perhaps, but one that I nevertheless assayed. The fun and challenge was to choose Shakespearean
devices and motives and weave them into some credible dramatic action…Whether or not that task has been fulfilled, I do
hope that this invented sequel will fasten the loose ends left by its predecessor."
The student actors appearing in Love's Labour's Wonne are: Katie Dougherty (Charlotte); Jeffrey Gunn (Ferdinand);
Pamela Eisenberg (Rosaline); Greg Davies (Berowne); Delia Meneely-Sepulvado (Maria); Adam Cronheim (Longville);
Rachel Feldman (Katherine); Louis Klapper (Dumain); Christina Squillante (Boyette); Peter Perez (Don Adriano de
Armado); Meredith Rich (Jacquenetta); Lucas Drecksage (Costard); Matthew Aaron (Holofernes); Eric Hebner (Henry);
Holly Andrew (Moth); and J.C. Hanisko (Dull).
